Wild Breeding program

Post by DXcus » 08 Jun 2010, 18:56

Hi Heiko, may i ask your expertise on which types of wilds are best to incorporate in breeding programs when i have goals such as:

What type of wild discus from what source to use who have these genetic features in the wild:
1. Gigantic and biggest discus size
2. Reddest discus
3. Yellowest or brownest discus (one that never colors red and always brown)- for goldens
4. Body shape (tallest or highest body)
5. Most spotted type
6. most blue type of discus

this way hobby breeders like me can focus on the search and save oneself from going Dizzy with the so many wild discus classifications and names and sources.

Thanks Amazon master Heiko

Hi thanks for the answers Heiko.

just quoting your post from simply for the others

Here some answers:
1. Gigantic and biggest discus size
- wild 22cm across (see page 196)
- tank breed I saw in Taiwan 24 cm across (changing watrer 100% twice daily)
2. Reddest discus
- wild From Rio Içá (page. 477)
– tank breed - well I guess you know
3. Yellowest or brownest discus (one that never colors red and always brown)- for goldens
- wild from lower Rio Xingu (page 193),
- tank breed you should know
4. Body shape (tallest or highest body)
- wild tallest you can see in the book;
- tank breed definitely now the tallest have some breeders near and around Shanghai, I just visted them.
5. Most spotted type
- wilds, Rio Urucú, Coari region and some souther Japurá (also in the book you have),
- spotted breeding forms, there are so many now, probablòy the most come from Malaysia with spots on the head, fins and gills.
6. most blue type of discus,
- in the wild almost no place is more blue than another, they are found in (almost) all places where blues are found (S. haraldi),
- in breeding some of the bluest I ever saw had Frankie in Hong Kong in 1995, but he is no longer.
